Kampot Governor Lauded for Effective Out-of-Court Dispute Resolutions

PHNOM PENH, July 19, 2024 — The Anti-Corruption Unit has commended Mao Thunin, Governor of Kampot Province, for his successful management of nearly 3,000 out-of-court dispute resolutions since assuming office. The unit praised the Governor's efforts for resolving disputes swiftly and fairly, based on legal principles, justice, and concrete evidence.

A forum for out-of-court dispute resolution was held on July 18, 2024, at the Kampot Provincial Hall, chaired by Governor Mao Thunin and Tak Hab, Chairman of the Provincial Council. The event also saw participation from Ou Sitha, Assistant to the Anti-Corruption Unit, representing Om Yentieng, Senior Minister and Chairman of the Anti-Corruption Unit, along with other relevant officials.

During the forum, Ou Sitha conveyed a message of appreciation from Senior Minister Om Yentieng, lauding Governor Thunin's dedication to justice irrespective of social status, and noting that in some cases, these resolutions proved more effective than traditional judicial processes. Kitti Nitikosal, another Senior Minister, also praised the Governor's proactive approach in handling complex land disputes and his commitment to transparency and fairness.

The Assistant to the Anti-Corruption Unit highlighted that while the unit supports the resolution of disputes outside the judiciary, Governor Thunin's approach adheres strictly to the rule of law and evidential procedures.

Over the past three years, Governor Thunin's out-of-court resolutions have directly involved community members including veterans, elders, and local authorities, earning commendations from both Prime Minister Hun Manet and the local populace.

On the day of the forum, 11 disputes were slated for resolution, reflecting the ongoing commitment to resolving conflicts efficiently and equitably.
